After changing her outfit and combing her hair, I asked Ed, “Is she (baby) ready for her photos?”

Ed: “Oh no, I need to check with Sophie first.”

Ed, to Sophie when she comes in the room: “Did I brush her hair okay?”

Sophie: “No, that hairstyle looks terrible!” *giggles*

Ed: “See, I knew I needed to check first!”

It’s hard to tell from some black and white words on a web page, so you’ll just have to trust me when I say this exchange was all super sweet and reflected such tenderness and care that Ed has towards his wife and daughter. I also heard him muttering to Madison, “I think you’re the prettiest girl in the world.”

Hearing daddies talk to their little girls is heart-meltingly adorable, isn’t it?

It was sweet watching these two new parents care for and love on their little one so well. Madison is 4-months-old, which means that during a photo session she looks where she pleases, prefers to be warm and cozy, and just asks to have a full belly and dry diaper.

Sessions with such little babies are different than most other sessions. If you were a fly on the wall of sessions like this, you’d hear me giving fewer directions than normal and more going with the flow of things set by the baby. In Madison’s case, this was walking back and forth in a field at Ute Valley, playing music for her, stopping for a bottle, warming up in a blanket every few minutes, shaking rattles, lots of high-pitched “Hi, Madison! Oh hi, sweet girl!”, and patience. Sophie and Ed were WONDERFUL with offering and receiving suggestions for how to help Madison be as happy as possible and in getting her facing the camera. They were also amazing at slowing down and sometimes just waiting in front of the camera for long periods of time without showing any awkwardness or discomfort (and sitting in front of a camera for long periods of time without further direction from a photographer can definitely be an uncomfortable feeling!)

Sophie and Ed, thanks for choosing me to capture your family’s memories! It was a joy to watch how well you love Madison and a pleasure to meet you both!
