Salsbery Family | Garden of the Gods

The Salsbery family is one of my favorite clients to photograph each year! Their five kids are tons of fun and Katie and Nathan are so kind. We always have a great time catching up. Plus, I love talking with Ella and Aubrey who are developing and growing in their own passions for photography.

Their session this year was right before all the Christmas visits and travels started (they too are from Indiana like me) and right in the midst of company parties and winter colds and sicknesses. It was not an ideal time, plus the two-year-old hadn’t gotten his daily nap, but we still made it work! I appreciate that importance of getting family photos holds a high place of priority in their lives and I hope these memories are treasured for many long years!

We were able to make it into the heart of Garden of the Gods for their session, too! This was a first for me because, for anyone who lives in Colorado Springs, you know this is not the easiest thing to do. Because Garden of the Gods is so iconic, free, and such an awesome park, it is always buzzing with people. I’ve been able to find a few, less-crowded areas of the Garden over the years, but it’s still a consistent challenge to find open parking where the client and I can easily meet for the session.

Doing this family session in the middle of the week, on a chilly day, and before the holiday crowds hit allowed us to find ample parking. I was also able to find an area in the center of the park where we could step away from the hum and hubbub of the crowds while getting the gorgeous red rocks in the background.

Pro tip: if you want your family photos in Garden of the Gods, better to do them in winter! Since the landscape is dead anyway, the red rocks provide a gorgeous backdrop and we won’t have to fight through the crowds of tourists.
