Paul and Katherine’s California redwood engagement session was amazing! When planning the trip to wine country, both Katherine and I thought the redwoods were too far away to see, much less go to for a photo session. However, we lucked out with Armstrong Redwoods Natural Preserve just 20 minutes from our adorable Airbnb! Though there were plenty of (relatively young) redwoods around the house too, the natural preserve did NOT disappoint.

It was so quiet and peaceful amongst the trees. We were all in awe as we got to touch a 1,400-year-old tree and look up into the branches of trees towering to 300 feet or more. It’s a very humbling feeling to be amongst living things that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. They’ve lived through our nation’s entire history plus more!

I could be wrong, but I think this was the perfect space for their engagements for several reasons. To start, we were practically the only people in the park. This was Paul and Katherine’s first professional photography experience and it relieves so much pressure on the situation to not have an audience. It’s completely normal to feel self-conscious in front of the camera. Plus, some of the directions I give can feel silly and ridiculous and it’s much easier to follow them when you don’t feel like everyone is watching! Both Paul and Katherine trusted me and followed my direction even when it was silly and they have some amazing photos because of it! The redwoods also provided the perfect space because, um, hello! It was California redwood engagement session and the setting was just gorgeous, plain and simple.

For Paul and Katherine’s session, you’ll start off with a few photos from the Airbnb before we get to the redwood photos. I hope you notice the photos where Katherine is laughing because 1) she has an infectious laugh and 2) Paul is especially good at drawing that laughter and joy out of her. I think these two are just perfect!
