Learn a little about lighting and location from this Garden of the Gods maternity morning session!
Have you had a photo session before and been told you can only have your photos taken right before and during sunset?
That’s pretty typical in the photography industry! “Golden Hour” is lovely. The light is golden and warm. The shadows are long and soft. During midday, by contrast, the light is directly overhead, bright, harsh, and tends to leave sharp shadows and lines on your face.
However, Golden Hour is not the only time of day with lovely light. Especially here in Colorado Springs where the mountains are in the west, it’s not always ideal.
At Golden Hour, the western sun causes the mountains to look hazy and undefined. In contrast, they are much more defined, detailed, and colorful during the morning or early afternoon.
Grace and Robert met me at 7:30 am for their maternity session above the Garden of the Gods and everything was perfect! It had rained the evening before, ruining our original plans for Golden Hour but I’m glad they were ruined because we couldn’t have asked for a better session.
I love that Grace took my advice to dress Robert up to match her dress. Most commonly, husbands wear nice slacks a button-down shirt to sessions. While that outfit is perfectly appropriate, you can feel how Robert’s suit really elevates the overall feel of their session. He matches Grace in style and I think it only draws more attention to how lovely Grace looks.
Here’s another session where a suit elevated the overall feel of the session!
We had fun during the session!
So excited for you two!
The clouds parted for a moment to give us this dramatic lighting! So fun!
Congratulations, Grace and Robert, on your growing family. 2020 has certainly thrown us all some crazy curveballs and I’m so grateful this one is joyful and full of love!
